Cauldron of Potions Pincushion


About this Pattern
Years ago, I crocheted a little coffee cup to use as a pincushion. It actually turned out pretty cute and I was quite happy with it, but it doesn't really fit me. I don't even drink coffee!
And to be honest, there is something else that has been secretly annoying me all these years: I sewed the handle of the cup on the wrong way around. 

Now that I write my own crochet patterns, I decided it was time to make a new pincushion. One that suits me a little better.

I love cozy things, but I also have a soft spot for spooky things. And since Halloween is almost here, the idea for a little witch's cauldron was born. With bright colours inside, because I wanted it to look both poisonous and cheerful at the same time.

You can change the colours to make another type of potion. Maybe a Love Potion with three pink yarns? Add a little sparkle with a sparkly yarn?
If you find the three-colour spiral too fiddly, you can choose to make it in one solid colour or with a multicoloured yarn.

You'll make the potion part first and later crochet it to the cauldron part, making this a no-sew project.

Materials:
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • DK yarn in 4 colours (1 for the cauldron and 3 for the potion)
  • stuffing
  • scissors
  • optional: stitch markers

Abbreviations (US terms):
MC = magic circle
sc =  single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
5Tr cluster = 5 treble crochet cluster
ch = chain
inc = increase
dec = decrease

Special Stitches:
There is only one special stitch in this project: the 5 treble crochet cluster.
Here's how to do that:
  1. Yarn over twice.
  2. Insert in the next stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (4 loops on the hook)
  4. Yarn over, pull through first 2 loops. Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops.
  5. Stop here, not entirely finishing the treble crochet. There are 2 loops left on the hook.
  6. Do this 4 more times in the same stitch. You'll end with 6 loops on your hook.
  7. Yarn over and pull through all six loops on your hook.

Finished Size:
The cauldron is about 8 cm (3.15 inches) wide and 6.5 cm (2.56 inches) tall. 

Pattern:

Potion:
Use 3 colours: A, B and C. Attach every new colour with a slip knot to the MC.

Note: With every colour, you work in another colour of the previous round. So Colour A is not worked into stitches with Colour A, but Colour C.


R1: Make a MC in Colour A.
Then 2 sc in A, 2 sc in B and 2 sc in C in the MC (6).
Just leave the loop of the old colours hanging loose. You will have 3 working loops at the same time. You can put a stitch marker in the loops you are not currently using if you want. 


Pull MC closed.



R2: With every colour: 2 inc (12).
R3: With every colour: (1 sc, inc) x2 (18)



R4: With every colour: (2 sc, inc) x2 (24)
R5: With every colour: (3 sc, inc) x2 (30)
Sl st with every colour and fasten off all yarns. Leave a little tail.

Use Cauldron Colour.

R1: 6 sc in MC (6)
R2: 6 inc (12)
R3: (1 sc, inc) x6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc, 5Tr cluster, 2 sc, inc) x3 (30)


R6: 30 sc (30)



R7: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x5, 2 sc (36)
R8: (5 sc, inc) x6 (42)
R9: 3 sc, inc, (6 sc, inc) x5, 3 sc (48)
R10: (7 sc, inc) x6 (52)


R11-14: 52 sc (52)



R15: (7 sc, dec) x6 (48)
R16: 3 sc, dec, (6 sc, dec) x5, 3 sc (42)
R17: (5 sc, dec) x6 (36)
R18: 2 sc, dec, (4 sc, dec) x5, 2 sc (30)



In the next row, you will attach the potion part. Work through the stitches of the cauldron like normal AND work through the stitches of the potion from the wrong side. Do not work into the slip stitches on the potion, but in the sc that the slip stitches are also worked into.
Stuff when you have connected 2/3 of the potion! Stuff firmly.



R19: 30 sc (30)


R20: (2 sc, inc) x10 (40)



Sl st and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Free pattern Beaded Flower Bookmark About this pattern: I've been seeing beaded crochet patterns all over Facebook lately and it piqued my interest. Last time I saw someone making a beaded spider, without actually crocheting on the beads, but simply putting them on the starting yarn.
