Fun Facts About the Red Panda
1. It isn't really a panda!
Despite its name, the red panda isn't closely related to the giant panda. In fact, red pandas belong to their own unique family called Ailuridae. Scientists used to have a hard time figuring out exactly where they belonged!
2. It has a very fluffy tail.
That beautiful striped tail isn't just for looking cute! A red panda uses its long, fluffy tail like a blanket when it sleeps. It can wrap its tail around its body to keep warm in the cold mountain forests where it lives.
3. Red pandas love bamboo too!
Just like giant pandas, red pandas eat a lot of bamboo. However, bamboo doesn't provide very much energy, so red pandas spend a large part of their day eating. They can also eat fruit, berries, insects, eggs and small animals when they find them.
4. They have a very special thumb.
Red pandas have an extra, thumb-like bone on their front paws. This helps them grip bamboo and other food. Giant pandas have a similar adaptation, which is one reason the two animals were once thought to be more closely related than they really are.
5. They are excellent climbers.
Red pandas spend a lot of time in trees and are incredibly good climbers. Their sharp, curved claws help them grip branches, and their flexible ankles allow them to climb down trees head-first. Pretty impressive for such a fluffy little animal!
6. They have a very unusual way of cooling down.
Red pandas can stick their tongues out to help cool themselves down, a bit like a dog does. They also have thick fur covering the soles of their feet, which helps protect them from cold temperatures and gives them extra grip on branches.
