About this Pattern:

When I was pregnant, I wanted to make a baby blanket. We nicknamed my son "Pingu" (maybe you've watched the children's TV series too?), so I wanted to crochet a C2C blanket with a penguin on it.

Of course, I turned to Google. I searched for "C2C baby blanket penguin" and found a pattern I really liked, so I started making it. It was my first C2C project, so the size of 80 × 100 squares didn't raise any alarm bells.

After quite a few rows, I started to realise it seemed a bit big. I went back to check the pattern, and that's when I noticed my mistake. It wasn't a "baby blanket penguin." It was a "baby penguin blanket." The same words, but the order made all the difference!

When my son turned one, I finally finished my adult-sized "baby blanket." Now it's his favourite blanket to snuggle under whenever he's feeling sick.

So that's why I had to make a baby blanket baby penguin. I hope this one turns out to be exactly the size you're looking for!

Materials:

• 3.0 mm hook
• darning needle to weave in ends
• DK yarn
• scissors
• optional: stitch markers

Yarn colours:

Black

White

Orange

Pink

Dark grey

Light grey

Any colour you wish to use for the background. Pics below for inspo! 

Colour Counts:

The 50 x 60 grid contains 3,000 squares in total. Here is the number of squares for each colour:

Black: 529

White: 462

Orange: 64

Pink: 14

Dark grey: 27

Light grey: 202

Background: 1702

The colour counts tell you how many squares of each colour are used in the graph. They don't tell you exactly how much yarn you'll need, as this can vary depending on your yarn, hook size and tension.

Choosing your background colour
I used a neutral background for my sample, but you can easily change it to match the nursery, bedroom or colour scheme you're making the blanket for. Since the background makes up more than half of the graph, changing this colour can give the finished blanket a completely different look.

Size:

With a 3.0 mm hook and DK yarn, for me this works up to about 72 x 87 cm (28 x 34 inches). But, this may vary depending on your yarn weight, hook size, and tension.

Gauge: 5 rows measure approximately 6 cm (2.3 inches).

Fun Facts About Penguins

1. Penguins have knees! You might not be able to see them, but they are there. Their knees are tucked inside their bodies, which is one reason their legs look so short. 
   
   
2. Penguins can drink seawater. They have a special gland above their eyes that helps remove excess salt from their bodies. The salt is then excreted through their nasal passages. So seawater is no problem for them!
   
   
3. Some penguins use pebbles to build their nests. Gentoo penguins, for example, collect stones to make their nests. And apparently, the best stones can be quite popular. Penguins have even been observed taking stones from other penguins' nests! 
   
   
4. Penguins can recognise their partner and chick by their voices. In a noisy colony with thousands of other penguins, this is incredibly useful. Parents and chicks use their individual calls to find each other.
   
   
5. Penguins don't all live in Antarctica. In fact, most penguin species live outside Antarctica. The Galápagos penguin even lives near the equator!

FAQ

Can I make this C2C Baby Penguin with a different yarn weight?

Yes, definitely! Keep in mind that using a different yarn weight can change the finished size of your project quite a bit. I recommend making a small swatch first to see how your yarn and hook combination affects the size before starting the entire project.

Can I sell finished projects made from this pattern?
